Mexican Flannel Bush (Fremontadendron)

This is a really cool plant. Thrives in spite of inattention. Neglect tolerant, drought tolerant... In fact, it actually does not like to be watered in the summer. There are many varieties - I'm not sure which this is. They are California native shrubs. These photos were taken in late May of 2004.

The name, Flannel Bush, is only partly accurate. The leaves look soft and fuzzy. In reality, they are irritating in the same way fiberglass is - the little spikes get into your skin hundreds at a time. (Remove them with duct tape!) Everyone's first reaction is to touch it. If you plant one of these, put it in a place where people can see it, but don't have to brush past it or be tempted to feel it.
