Gardening

We have just over an acre of land. Before there was a house here, it had been part of a chicken ranch (12,000 chickens where our house is now), a lemon grove, and an avocado grove. The avocado trees in our yard are part of that grove. If you look from the right angle, you can see how the rows match up with all the neighbors' trees. They are about 50 years old, and many are still producing.

So how does one deal with this much yard? Read "Ten Steps to Gardening Survival"

See what grows and lives here: "The Natural History of Our Yard"

This is our backyard, looking from house toward the barn.

Looking out the front door, on a rare rainy day. The trees are avocado trees.

One of our garden areas - mostly herbs, and some veggies, stair-stepped up a hillside.

A collection of succunlents and other plants given to us by Michael's grandmother, when she had to give up her home.

We've planted daffodils under some of the avocados - gophers don't care for them

With three critters there is abundant material for composting. Here are six bins, 6 x 6 x 4 feet. Each holds about 1 months' worth of manure. They were meant to be a temporary solution, and are beginning to rot (now 6 years old), so I need to replace them.
