"There is no character howsoever good and fine, but it can be destroyed by ridicule howsoever poor and witless. Observe the ass, for instance: his character is about perfect, he is the choicest spirit among all the humbler animals, yet see what ridicule has brought him to. Instead of feeling complimented when we are called an ass, we are left in doubt."

Mark Twain, From Pudd'nhead Wilson,

DONKEYS!

Eeyore, grazing on the back lawn. Clementine as a baby, with her mom, Wildflower.
Here's Eeyore, enjoying the back lawn. During the summers, he is dark brown and sleek (above). In winter he is fuzzy and lighter.

Eeyore is a nervous but sweet little guy. He tries to do what's right, if you can only explain it to him. A little bratty, but mostly timid and philosophical.

The one on the left is Clementine, as a little baby donk. Her mom is Wildflower. When we got Clem she was about 4 years old.

Clementine is bold, pushy, friendly, demanding, fearless, and endlessly inquisitive. If it's not nailed down, it's a toy.

As is typical of donkey owners, we got into donkeys sort of by chance and accident. We started out with two horses, Sabrina and Cooper, and got Eeyore as a buddy for Cooper, when he got left behind at home alone. After we sold Cooper, little Eeyore needed a buddy of his own, so we added Clementine to our herd.

The people of the Longears Internet mailing list have been a huge help in learning about Eeyore - what's normal for a donkey, training tips, etc., not to mention they are a nice bunch of folks with some great stories and jokes.
