A Note to a Horsey Friend, About Lydia Hiby, March 7, 2001

Hi There,

The woman I talked with is Lydia Hiby (http://www.lydiahiby.com). She charges [check her web site] for 15 minutes on the phone - you send a check, then after a few days you call her on Tuesday or Wednesday (and get busy signals forever). Detailed instructions are on her site. I don't remember that she asked for a photo - but I did send one (printed right in the letter).

Very nice lady, and fun to talk to. I'm pretty solidly in the skeptic camp, but figured it couldn't hurt. It really was surprising what she came up with! It's hard to tell, when she says Sabrina feels this or that way about someting... well, maybe she does, maybe she doesn't. But she got several bits of solid information right, or astonishingly close, and nothing really "wrong", that I could tell.

I want to write up a more detailed report, but briefly...

- She said Sabrina has scar tissue on the right side, in front of her udder, which I had not mentioned, and is exactly right - we've even biopsied it, and it's the prime suspect as the cause of the swelling.

- She said Sabrina starts to feel pain in her gut, acting colicky and anxious, and wants to roll about 10-15 minutes into work, which is dead on right.

- She says Sabrina likes purple a lot, and doesn't like red - "Somebody tried to put her in red once, and she did not like that." Sure as heck, everything I have for her is purple, and the photos from before I bought her shows her in a red halter. (The photo I sent didn't show any tack.)

- She said Sabrina had a big liver chestnut friend who misses her, and was her first real horse-friend. "He was sending her messages for quite a while after he left." That would be Cooper - the only other horse we've owned.

- She said Sabrina has a huge ego, is very independent, knows she's special, and enjoys all the attention. Hard to confirm, but sounds about right.

- She said Sabrina thinks kids should be seen, but not heard. She likes the attention from them, and puts up with them because she knows it makes me happy, but she doesn't want to be a kid's horse. In fact, Sabrina is nice to kids - a great ambassador for horsedom at shows and on trails - doesn't even fuss when the run up behind her and hug her legs (horrors! but it's happened!). I only know of one time (reported by her former owner) that a kid tried to ride her (8 y/o boy). She grew roots, and would not budge until they took him down and put someone else on her, then she was fine.

- She said, without any info from me about breeding or not, that Sabrina had been bred several times, but kept willing away the pregnancy because she didn't want a foal. Fact is, she had been bred about 10 times over 4 months or so. When it finally did "take", it died while she was in labor, and they had to cut it up to get it out. She's never had any live foals.

So go figure...

Lots of other stuff about how Sabrina feels about being ridden (likes it), what she wants to do (dressage and trail), etc. Harder to confirm that stuff, but it fits with my experience of her.

I'd say it was definitely worth the $30. I'd do it again. Before you call her, make a list of questions. There were some things I wanted to know that I forgot to ask.

Have fun, Linda
