Ruling Out Enterliths (Stones)

July 13, 2000

I just got back from taking Sabrina to the local (40 miles away) veterinary hospital, where I took her to be x-rayed for stones (enteroliths) or sand. The Dr. even did a rectal exam on her. Good news! Nothing interesting in her gut at all. :-) We still don't know what's up with the udder swelling, but at least she's not an impaction (or torsion) just waiting to happen.

It was really easy, fairly inexpensive (less than $200 for the x-rays), and now at least there's one less thing to worry about.

By the way, they have some *huge* stones there "on display". I thought they must have done some work for the Wild Animal Park and gotten them from elephants, but nooooo... they were from horses! I've seen 'em up to about softball side, but they had a couple there that were as big as your head! Oh my God. At least Sabrina doesn't have one of those!

The x-rays were pretty easy. They did sedate her, which is understandable, given that she needed to be in a small room with whirring, flashing, moving, expensive equipment. She was very good - curious about the machine, but not silly at all.

It was really hot in the x-ray room. Before we went in we'd been standing around in the sun, watching horses (one mini) in various gory states of disrepair being led about (colic surgery mostly). Sabrina was dopey, wobbly, and sweaty. *I* was dopey, wobbly, and sweaty. I've been fighting off a bad cold or the flu, and last night I could not sleep - finally slept a little while sitting up on the couch. And of course they had me in a heavy, lead tunic thing. It was all I could do to not pass out. They kept leaving us to develop films and see how they'd come out, and I was hoping if they found me passed out on the ground that they wouldn't blame Sabrina. A little fresh air and cold water got me back to normal enough to get by. Boy, am I looking forward to a shower and a nap though!

The hardest part was the no dinner/no breakfast bit. She got lots of juice, Gatorade, alfalfa tea, and peppermints, but no solid food. She was *really mad* last night - running around snaking her neck. This morning she was just bummed and confused. She did get her breakfast immediately after we were done, in the trailer, while I was in taking care of the bill. I could see her from the office window, and she wasn't even coming up for air. ;-)

She's happily back home. I'll give her a day to shake off the wierd experiences, then we'll start on the other path of udder-diagnosis, which is exercising (with/without meds, with/without trotting, hot/cold weather, short/long workouts) and keeping a diary of results.

A million thanks for all the support and good wishes! Linda
